Day 9: Mykonos -- Soul-soothing

Today was a shorter day -- we docked in Mykonos around 6:30 am and set sail again around 2pm.  Roisin, Carolina and I headed into the town while Sara took an excursion to the nearby island of Delos.

While we didn't have a lot of time in Mykonos, we made the most of it.  It was another hot day, 27C in the shade, but a constant wind kept it wonderfully comfortable.

The island is just simply beautiful.  Perched on the edge of the sea, its winding roads twist among pristine white houses with blue roofs, pink flowers peak over the tops of walls, the warm wind smells of fresh salty air.

As we wandered the narrow lanes, it was still quite early in the morning, and the island was quiet.

We came across an older man leaning on a ledge.  He saw us with our cameras in hand and signalled to us that he'd take our picture.  After snapping a few shots, he handed Roisin back her camera and shuffled through a gate into a private yard.

A short while later we came upon a bay, where fishing boats were bobbing and the day's fresh catch was being put out for sale.

It was a relaxing day as we meandered around the island.  We did a little shopping in the many jewelry stores, as we made our way to the island's famous windmills.

There are currently 16 windmills on Mykonos, most of which were built in the 16th century. Mykonos was located on a major trade route and the windmills were used to mill grain for sea transport.

My future home

After a few hours, it was time for lunch, so we stopped at a restaurant in Little Venice, where homes and restaurants sit overhanging the sea. We were seated right beside the water, with a wonderful view. And the food was divine! Mussels, baked feta and fried zuchinni that were cooked to perfection.

After lunch it was time to return to our ship and set sail for Turkey.

For dinner tonight, I chose poached seafood and avocado, a salad, spice encrusted salmon, and a fruit plate. My clothes are definitely fitting a little more snugly than they did a week ago!
